The Virginia Tech Hokies are enjoying a bye week following their convincing 31-7 victory over Stanford, bringing their record to 3-3. Their next matchup will be a Thursday night game at Lane Stadium against the Boston College Eagles.
Although the Hokies aren’t playing this week, they are still practicing, and head coach Brent Pry spoke with the media on Wednesday. He provided updates on injuries, including a concerning situation with a long-time starter.
Senior safety Jalen Stroman, who had shoulder surgery in the offseason, sustained an injury during the season opener against Vanderbilt and hasn’t played since. Pry mentioned that Stroman’s return this season is uncertain.
“Yeah, Stroman, it’s a long shot that he’ll be back,” Pry said. “He might get cleared later on, but we still don’t know. If he does, we’ll have to see how ready he can be to contribute effectively.”
On a positive note, Stroman still has a redshirt year available if he decides to come back for another season.
Redshirt junior running back P.J. Prioleau, the son of safeties coach and former Virginia Tech defensive back Pierson Prioleau, was starting to establish himself as a contributor behind Bhayshul Tuten. Unfortunately, he is also expected to be sidelined for a significant period due to an ankle injury he sustained last week against Stanford.
“Yeah, he’s going to be out significant time,” Pry said. “Very disappointing for him. For us. He’s a great teammate, he’s earned every opportunity, we were excited for what he could do in the back half of the season. So that’s a disappointing loss because of how much he has invested in this thing, but also from a production standpoint for us.”
Prioleau primarily played on special teams over the past two seasons but began to make his mark as a running back this year, backing up Tuten and Malachi Thomas. He had a notable touchdown run that was unfortunately nullified by a questionable holding call during the controversial loss to Miami two weeks ago.
With Prioleau out, there could be opportunities for others, including freshman running back Tyler Mason and wide receivers Takye Heath and Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw.
The Hokies are gearing up to face a 4-2 Boston College team that had been performing well until last week’s disappointing loss to Virginia.
