A year after receiving a serious off-field suspension, promising prospect is no longer with the Red Sox organization.
The 22-year-old infielder, who had been climbing the prospect rankings after a strong 2023 season in Double-A, has been released by the team, according to transaction logs. This announcement follows Bonaci’s suspension for the entire 2024 season due to a violation of the minor league Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy. The specifics surrounding the incident that led to the suspension are not publicly known.
The Red Sox signed Bonaci as an international free agent from Venezuela in 2018 for $290,000. By 2023, he was firmly on prospect radars, enhancing his reputation by hitting .297 with 18 doubles, 11 home runs, and an .818 OPS in 79 games split between High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland. In August, while playing in Portland, he was placed on the reserve list and sent home to Venezuela, described by an industry source as “administrative leave.” Although he was reinstated to participate in the Arizona Fall League, he played only two games before Major League Baseball put him on the restricted list for violating the policy. This led to his suspension for the entire 2024 season.
At the end of last season, both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline ranked Bonaci as the No. 11 prospect in the Red Sox organization.
