As the Boston Red Sox wrap up their 2024 season, one pressing question lingers among fans: How will Craig Breslow and the front office enhance the pitching staff?
With the starting rotation struggling and the bullpen faltering in August, the Red Sox are open to all potential solutions, whether that involves free agency, trades, or taking a chance on veteran players looking for a fresh start. They’re just a few key arms away from being competitive in the playoffs.
From Breslow’s comments during the season-ending press conference on Monday, it appears that the team plans to direct any significant spending toward bolstering the starting rotation. There’s even speculation that an All-Star from the Atlanta Braves might find his way to Boston.
Max Fried, the left-handed pitcher who started for the Braves in their Wild Card loss to the San Diego Padres, is now available. FanSided’s Cody Williams suggested that Fried “won’t be back” with Atlanta in 2025, creating an opportunity for the Red Sox to acquire him.
“Fried will be a free agent after the 2024 season, and for over a year, it’s been suggested that the Braves needed to secure an extension for him before his final season of club control if they wished to keep him,” Williams explained. “Since no deal was reached, it’s widely believed another team could sign him away from Atlanta.”
At 30, Fried has accomplished nearly everything a pitcher could aspire to, aside from winning a Cy Young Award. He’s a two-time All-Star, a World Series champion, holds a 73-36 career record with a 3.07 ERA, and has proven his durability with six complete games and four shutouts.
However, signing Fried will require a hefty investment. Spotrac projects his next contract at around $149 million, with estimates rising to nearly $200 million. He has earned the right to seek a lucrative deal and is unlikely to take a discount for any team.
While the Red Sox’s previous frugality may lack a clear rationale, securing Fried would go a long way in justifying their strategy. They’ve reset the luxury tax, established a foundation for a homegrown rotation, and now have a chance to secure a seasoned ace.
