BREAKING: Red Wings sign talented forward to a deal worth $825,000

On Monday, the Detroit Red Wings revealed that they have signed forward  to a one-year contract. The agreement will have a cap hit of $825,000 for the 2024-25 season.

His new contract represents a slight pay reduction, as he moves from an entry-level deal with an average annual value (AAV) of $925,000. The 24-year-old, who was a restricted free agent with arbitration rights this offseason, spent some time as a healthy scratch after his March call-up to Detroit, playing only three games. Despite speculation about potential trades, no official trade talks involving Berggren have been reported.

The Red Wings hold Berggren in high regard, with general manager Steve Yzerman expressing hope that he will make a significant impact at the NHL level. Berggren himself believes he is capable of doing so.

In the previous season, 2022-23, Berggren had a solid performance with the Red Wings, scoring 15 goals and 13 assists in 67 games, which placed him ninth on the team in points. Over his 79 NHL games to date, Berggren has accumulated 17 goals and 17 assists for 34 points, while in 130 AHL games, he has tallied 127 points.

The Red Wings have ample cap space heading into the new season, with less than $17 million remaining and 41 out of 50 possible contracts already signed for the 2024-25 season, according to CapWages.
