A left wing who was with the Detroit Red Wings organization for five years, has signed with the Munich Red Bulls in the German Ice Hockey League. The top talent who was signed by the Red Wings as a college free agent out of Michigan State after the 2018-19 season, played 60 NHL games over four seasons. Last season, he spent time with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate, playing 54 games and recording nine goals and 36 points. He joins the Munich Red Bulls to replace injured Trevor Parkes, another former Griffins player, and will wear No. 17.
Taro Hirose, a Winnipeg native and a Hobey Baker candidate during his final season at Michigan State, is making a move to the Munich Red Bulls in the German Ice Hockey League. Hirose’s standout NHL season was in 2019-20, where he played 26 games and earned seven points. He also had impressive performances in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins, recording back-to-back 50-plus point seasons in 2021-22 and 2022-23.
In addition to Hirose’s move, several other former Red Wings players are seeking new opportunities: Gustav Lindstrom and Mark Pysyk have received professional tryouts (PTOs) with the Anaheim Ducks, while Matt Luff is on a similar tryout with the Florida Panthers, the defending Stanley Cup champions.
Hirose’s younger brother, Akito, who is 25, is part of the Vancouver Canucks’ organization.
