Latest: Blockbuster trade proposal has Devils losing super talent to Leafs in exchange of two players

The Toronto Maple Leafs have not yet made any moves to strengthen their forward group this offseason, focusing instead on improving their defense and goaltending following another first-round playoff exit.

Using PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, which allows users to design their own trades, one user has proposed a deal that would see the Maple Leafs acquire Ondrej Palat from the New Jersey Devils.

Devils get:

Calle Jarnkrok
David Kampf

The proposed trade is intriguing as it allows both the Toronto Maple Leafs and New Jersey Devils to move on from contracts that may not be working out as planned, while also addressing their respective needs.

Toronto would acquire Ondrej Palat, who is in the third year of a five-year, $30 million contract. The left winger would slot in as the Maple Leafs’ second-line left wing, bringing additional scoring and valuable playoff experience to the team. Palat, a key contributor to the Tampa Bay Lightning’s back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021, has had a tougher time offensively since joining the Devils. Last season, he recorded 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points in 71 games.

In return, New Jersey would receive two bottom-six forwards, Calle Jarnkrok and David Kampf, to bolster their depth. Jarnkrok, who has two years remaining on his four-year, $8.4 million deal, could provide additional scoring at the bottom of the lineup. Last season, he played 52 games, recording 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points.

Kampf would add a solid defensive presence as the Devils’ fourth-line center and contribute to the penalty kill. He is in the second year of a four-year, $9.6 million contract and had 8 goals and 11 assists for 19 points in 78 games last season.
