Although the Detroit Red Wings and their fans have a strong rivalry with the Ottawa Senators, they have had no trouble bringing in former Senators players. This season, the Red Wings have already signed Vladimir Tarasenko, Alex DeBrincat, Tyler Motte, and Cam Talbot, and they’ve now added another name. Former Senators enforcer Austin Watson has reportedly agreed to a professional tryout with his hometown team, the Detroit Red Wings, according to his agency.
Since leaving Ottawa after the 2022-23 season, Watson has signed a PTO for the second consecutive summer. Last year, this strategy paid off as he secured a one-year contract with Tampa Bay, although he was frequently a healthy scratch and also spent some time on injured reserve. In the 33 games he did play, Watson recorded two goals and two assists, finishing 16th in the NHL with 93 penalty minutes.
Watson returns to his roots, having grown up in Ann Arbor where he played AAA hockey with Compuware. He was a celebrated junior player, winning two Memorial Cups and an OHL Playoff MVP award. However, in the NHL, Watson’s role has shifted to that of a grinder and fringe player. If he secures a spot on the Red Wings, he will be expected to continue in that capacity.
