Over the past three years, the Green Bay Packers have strategically injected youth into their offensive skill positions, greatly benefiting the franchise and moving away from nostalgic choices.
This calculated and decisive strategy from general manager Brian Gutekunst nearly propelled the Packers to the NFC Championship Game last season, with many analysts and columnists now viewing Green Bay as strong contenders for the 2024 season.
However, this approach might also lead to the departure of veteran running back AJ Dillon, affectionately known as ‘The Quadfather’ in Titletown, before the end of August.
Dillon, 26, re-signed with the Packers for his fifth NFL season under a one-year contract worth just $2.75 million. Yet, on August 16, Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report suggested that Dillon might be a player the Packers should consider trading before the regular season begins.
Fowler pointed out that with Josh Jacobs replacing Aaron Jones as the starting back and rookie MarShawn Lloyd showing impressive speed and power, Dillon could end up as the third-string running back. Fowler proposed that trading Dillon now could potentially yield a draft pick for Green Bay.
Additionally, Fowler mentioned that players like Jarveon Howard or Emanuel Wilson could fill Dillon’s role as a third-string back if he were traded.
Dillon struggled in 2023, averaging a career-low 3.4 yards per carry and recording his fewest rushing yards since his rookie year with just 613 yards and only 2 touchdowns. Despite being given more opportunities than Jones last season, Dillon did not capitalize on the chance to prove himself.
While Dillon has shown some ability in the passing game, with 86 catches for 763 yards and 2 touchdowns over his four years with the Packers, Jacobs is now the clear top choice after being signed to a four-year, $48 million deal.
The Packers’ decision to draft MarShawn Lloyd with the 88th overall pick in the third round suggests they are looking for Dillon’s replacement. Dillon did not help his case in the preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns on August 10, rushing four times for only 2 yards.
As Dillon’s future with the team appears uncertain, especially with the upcoming roster cuts, it might be prudent for the Packers to explore trading him and see what value they can get in return. While they might only receive a late-round pick for Dillon given his position and recent performance, Gutekunst has previously made successful moves with late-round picks, making a trade potentially worthwhile.
