FSU Star Player Abruptly Departs
Concerns Mount as Current QB Leaves Program Days Before Fall Camp
Stadium on Wednesday, Florida State’s current starting quarterback abruptly departed the program, leaving head coach Mike Norvell scrambling for answers just weeks before fall camp.
Sources close to the team confirmed that Ashton Daniels, the Auburn transfer named FSU’s starting quarterback earlier this offseason, has entered the transfer portal and will not return for the 2026 season. The decision comes without warning and with no public statement yet from Daniels or the university.

Daniels, who arrived in Tallahassee after the departures of Brock Glenn and Jaylen King, was expected to stabilize a QB room thinned by transfers and eligibility losses. He was tapped as the starter despite never taking a snap in garnet and gold, a move that already raised questions about the evaluation window and long-term continuity in the QB room. 9142bac60a65
“With multiple quarterbacks still in the room, including one who didn’t participate in spring, the decision raises questions about how much of the competition truly played out,” one analyst noted earlier this summer. 0a65
The timing couldn’t be worse for Norvell, who is entering what many consider a “must-win” 2026 season after back-to-back uneven years. The Seminoles went 2-10 in 2024 following their 13-1 ACC Championship run in 2023. 0a651416
Daniels had shown flashes but hadn’t “consistently carried an offense over a full season at a high level”, and now FSU’s offense faces even more uncertainty with an inexperienced receiver group and brand new offensive line. 0a65
With Daniels gone, redshirt sophomore Brock Glenn had already announced plans to transfer with two seasons of eligibility remaining, and true freshman Kevin Sperry remains as the only scholarship QB who saw game action last year. FSU also brought in Tommy Castellanos, who transferred from Boston College, but his role moving forward is unclear. 9142e78f
The program has not announced a replacement starter. FSU opens the season at home in just under six weeks.
