The relationship between the Philadelphia Phillies and Alec Bohm has been somewhat complex since his promotion to the major league roster. Although he made a strong initial impression, his performance has been inconsistent at times, which led the team to consider other options during this past offseason’s free agency period.
“If the Phillies were to move Bohm, in my judgment, it would have to be because they think there’s a chance of getting a Bregman or they’re one of the teams potentially that could look at a Bo Bichette at a spot that’s not shortstop,” MLB insider Jon Morosi said. “There’s different ways they could augment their club, but you would have to have a clear upgrade on Bohm if you’re gonna go ahead and make that trade.”
The Phillies did decide to extend starting southpaw Jesus Luzardo after an impressive 2025 campaign.
“The Philadelphia Phillies locked in Jesus Luzardo a year before he was due to reach free agency by agreeing with the left-hander on a five-year contract extension. The deal is worth $135 million, sources told ESPN on Monday, and runs through the 2031 season, with a club option for 2032,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote.
While Luzardo’s signing is great for the Phillies, it isn’t so great for Bohm, who now finds himself on the outside looking in.
“Alec Bohm was a long shot to re-sign with the Phillies before Luzardo’s extension. Now, it seems incredibly unlikely. The third baseman is entering a contract season where he will earn $10.2 million in his final year of arbitration. A year after starting for the NL All-Star team in 2024, he struggled, as his total doubles decreased from 44 to 18, and his RBI total dropped from 97 to 57. He played in 120 games, 23 fewer than the year before, due to injuries,” TBOH’s Matt Grazel wrote.
If Bohm doesn’t have a strong season this year, the Phillies won’t hesitate to give their top prospects a chance. Philadelphia is in win-now mode, so no production from Bohm likely means he will be moved aside.
The Phillies remain a strong ballclub, aiming to return to the World Series for the first time since 2022. Bohm knows this must be his statement year—or he could find himself playing somewhere else in 2027.
