BREAKING: Braves Confirm To Trade For Cardinals $73 Million All-Star

The Atlanta Braves could be looking to add another outfielder either just before MLB Opening Day or soon after the season gets underway, which is now only nine days away. With some unexpected challenges already affecting the team early in 2026, executive Alex Anthopoulos may need to pursue a significant trade to strengthen Atlanta’s depth—particularly in the outfield.

Jurickson Profar’s 162-game PED suspension has freed up some financial flexibility, potentially allowing the Braves to bring in a bat. Although free agency has largely wrapped up, there are still trade possibilities available, including St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar. One potential scenario could involve Atlanta trading Sean Murphy to St. Louis in exchange for Nootbaar.

MLB Trade Idea Sends Lars Nootbaar to Atlanta

The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly interested in trading for Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar as they look to upgrade outfield defense and depth while St. Louis continues to sell off talent.

The St. Louis Cardinals have essentially embraced a full rebuild this offseason, so making one more significant move wouldn’t be surprising.

In this proposed deal, the Atlanta Braves would receive outfielder Lars Nootbaar, while the Cardinals would get catcher Sean Murphy and shortstop prospect Alex Lodise.

Given that St. Louis currently has one of the weaker catching groups in MLB, bringing in Murphy—despite his ongoing recovery from a hip injury—could help strengthen their depth behind the plate. From Atlanta’s perspective, even though nothing has been officially stated, Murphy may no longer be a key piece, and shedding his six-year, $73 million contract could be beneficial.

Murphy hasn’t played more than 100 games or hit above .200 in either of the past two seasons. Still, his experience, leadership, and power potential at the catcher position could provide value to the Cardinals.

Meanwhile, acquiring Nootbaar could be an underrated move for Atlanta. His versatility in the outfield would give the Braves flexibility, allowing players like Ronald Acuña Jr. and Mike Yastrzemski to rest or serve as designated hitter, while Nootbaar fills in defensively.
