The Philadelphia Phillies reached the World Series in 2022 but haven’t been able to return since, and they may be considering some significant roster changes.
Alec Bohm drew plenty of trade buzz during last year’s winter meetings. Although he earned an All-Star nod in 2024, his performance dipped this season—though he remained dependable. With free agency only a year away, Bohm could be dealt if the Phillies look to improve at third base.
If they move Bohm, the Phillies would have to secure a new third baseman, but trading him could also address one of their biggest weaknesses. Philadelphia badly needs an outfielder who can boost their lineup. ESPN’s Eric Karabell suggested a potential deal with the Boston Red Sox, sending Bohm in a package that brings back Jarren Duran.
“These lightning-rod players certainly are not coming off their best seasons and perhaps each needs the proverbial change of scenery,” wrote Karabell. “The Red Sox may need someone to play third base, and Bohm, while no match for Alex Bregman, is a capable hitter and defender. The Phillies could then get a more consistent third baseman who enjoys playing in Philadelphia. Duran would fill Philadelphia’s center-field need, and it would create some opportunity in a crowded Boston outfield. See, trades can work out for both teams!”
If Bregman leaves, the Red Sox could simply turn to Marcelo Mayer at third base. However, Duran is part of an outfield logjam, and the 2024 All-Star Game MVP has solid trade value. Getting a one-year rental in Bohm while Mayer establishes himself, along with a prospect, would not be a bad move for the Red Sox.
Duran is under club control through 2028 and would be a massive upgrade for the Phillies. He led the American League in triples last season and had a .774 OPS. Meanwhile, the Red Sox would alleviate their outfield logjam and get a potential trade deadline chip in Bohm.
