Just six weeks after firing head coach Robert Saleh, the Jets announced on Tuesday that they have also parted ways with general manager Joe Douglas. According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, this move is part of a larger “messy” situation that has been unfolding within the organization.
Breer had previously reported that the atmosphere at Jets headquarters had been “tenuous,” with a growing sense that owner Woody Johnson’s actions have created a culture that undermines the team’s chances of success. Sources within the organization suggest that Johnson places too much emphasis on outside opinions, particularly those from non-football voices on the internet, which has led to frustration among staff.
Johnson’s desire to win is evident, especially in his approval of the Aaron Rodgers trade, but his involvement in football decisions may be straining relationships and limiting the autonomy of those in charge of the team’s operations.
