The Astros are acquiring outfielder from the Yankees, according to Chandler Rome of *The Athletic*. The specifics of the trade return to New York have not yet been revealed.
The 27-year-old was drafted 35th overall by the Reds in 2016 and was considered a top-100 prospect as recently as 2021. By then, he had already been traded several times—first from the Reds to the Padres in a deal that sent Yasiel Puig to Cleveland, and later from San Diego to Seattle in the seven-player trade that brought Austin Nola to the Padres. Despite moving through multiple organizations, Trammell performed well in his first taste of Triple-A with the Mariners’ affiliate in Tacoma and earned a call-up to the majors in 2021.
However, his MLB debut did not go as hoped. Trammell posted a poor .160/.256/.359 slash line with a 73 wRC+ in 178 plate appearances over 51 games during his first season in the big leagues. Although he showed power with eight home runs, he struck out at an unsustainable 42.1% rate and struggled as an outfielder, where he was capable of playing center field but wasn’t a strong defender. Over the next two years, his performance improved slightly, as he hit .176/.285/.378 in 173 plate appearances, with a 12.7% walk rate and continued power, though his strikeout rate remained above 30%.
While Trammell excelled at Triple-A, posting a solid .268/.381/.500 line, he became less viable as a center fielder, logging just two innings at the position in 2023. This led the Mariners to designate him for assignment in March, opting not to keep him on their Opening Day roster. The Dodgers claimed him off waivers but he appeared in only five games before being DFA’d in mid-April. The Yankees then claimed him, but after just five games on their roster, Trammell was DFA’d again. This time, he cleared waivers and was outrighted to the minors, where he spent the rest of the season performing well at Triple-A, hitting .256/.381/.488 in 106 games.
Now, Trammell is joining the Astros, where he will provide additional outfield depth behind Chas McCormick and Jake Meyers. The 27-year-old will likely compete for a spot on Houston’s bench during Spring Training for the 2024 season.
