Penn State aims to close out the 2025 recruiting cycle strong, navigating a unique landscape compared to recent years filled with decommitments and flips. The Nittany Lions are making a concerted effort to secure high-profile targets who initially committed elsewhere.
One successful flip has already occurred with three-star cornerback Josh Johnson, but the team continues to pursue in-state prospect Zahir Mathis, who is currently committed to Ohio State. Ranked No. 73 in the 2025 class and third in Pennsylvania, the four-star athlete announced his commitment to the Buckeyes in January.
Despite his commitment, Penn State has kept the lines of communication open, hosting Mathis on campus twice during the summer. Recent insights from Sean Fitz of BlueWhiteIllustrated suggest that Penn State is on “semi-equal footing” with Ohio State in their pursuit of Mathis.
It’s important to note that Mathis has shown no inclination to waver from his commitment, and with an official visit to Columbus scheduled for October 26, there’s a possibility he could solidify his decision. If he leaves that visit still undecided, Penn State may be in a strong position to attempt a flip.
This situation is one to watch closely. While confidence in flipping Mathis may not be as high as with other targets, the fact that he is considering the Nittany Lions is a positive sign.
