The Yankees are just days away from their World Series matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers, aiming for their 28th MLB title after a season of ups and downs.
However, as the season concludes, they’ll face a significant challenge in retaining their star player, All-Star Juan Soto. He is expected to be the centerpiece of a fierce free-agent bidding war this winter. While the Yankees are the favorites to keep him, they’ll have serious competition, particularly from their crosstown rivals, the New York Mets, backed by their billionaire owner.
New York Post MLB insider Joel Sherman recently examined what the Mets need to do to reach the World Series next season, suggesting that targeting Soto with a massive financial offer would be a smart strategy. Given the Mets’ financial strength, Sherman believes they could easily outbid the Yankees.
He pointed out that the Yankees’ planned financial adjustments could hinder their ability to re-sign Soto, who is projected to command a $600 million contract this offseason.
**Juan Soto’s 2024 Playoff Stats:**
– .368 AVG
– .478 OBP
– .895 SLG
– 3 HR
– 6 RBI
– 5 R
Sherman stated, “The Yankees want to keep Soto—every team should want him. But I believe Hal Steinbrenner is serious about lowering the Yankees’ payroll from over $300 million. He might concede in a bidding war with Uncle Stevie. But will Cohen go all out? He should.”
