Is it likely that the San Diego Padres will lose some players to free agency?
This is certainly a realistic scenario. No team can retain every player on its roster before the 2025 season, and the Padres will face the same challenge. With several players approaching free agency, FanSided’s Zachary Rotman has speculated that Martín Pérez may be playing for a different team in 2025.
“Although he performed well during his two months with the Padres, it’s uncertain if that level of performance can be sustained. At 33 years old, Pérez allowed a career-high home run rate of 4.2 percent and struggles to generate strikeouts,” Rotman noted.
“The Padres might bring him back as a cheap option, especially after Joe Musgrove’s unfortunate injury, but they can, and should, aim higher. The Padres have plenty of high-end talent with guys like Dylan Cease, Michael King, and Yu Darvish, but they could use more reliability than what Perez, a pitcher who had an ERA well over 5.00 before the trade this season and pitched in relief late in 2023 due to struggles, can provide.”
This isn’t surprising. Pérez is projected to receive $11 million for a one-year contract in free agency, which might be too steep for the Padres. While he was reliable during his time with the team, another franchise could be willing to offer him more than San Diego is prepared to pay.
