William Nylander Comments on Center Experiment Failure with Maple Leafs

John Tavares has skated for the second straight day after dealing with an illness, while Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube mentioned that William Nylander’s status will be a game-time decision as he also recovers from an illness. Berube noted that Nylander is showing improvement and that his situation will be closely monitored leading up to the game.

Here’s a summary from the morning skate:

Joseph Woll faces shots; Anthony Stolarz is likely starter
Joseph Woll participated in morning skate, facing shots during routine drills. He and Anthony Stolarz took turns for a few minutes, after which Woll worked with the forwards while Stolarz focused on one-timer drills with the defensemen. Stolarz was the first goalie off the ice and is expected to start.

Woll was placed on injured reserve on October 9 and is eligible to return against the Kings, but all signs suggest that Stolarz will get the nod. Dennis Hildeby was also at the morning skate but participated less than Woll and Stolarz.

Timothy Liljegren set for season debut; advised to simplify his play
Timothy Liljegren is anticipated to make his season debut on Wednesday after being a healthy scratch for the first three games. He was passed over by Conor Timmins but is expected to partner with Simon Benoit. Berube commented on Liljegren’s game, emphasizing the need for him to simplify his approach.

“He has the talent,” Berube said. “His skating and puck movement are strong. He should be a good puck-mover, but it’s crucial he manages his game and makes smart decisions—avoiding risky plays. It’s about simplifying things and winning battles as a defenseman, particularly in front of the net and along the boards.”

William Nylander’s status uncertain
Nylander is also battling an illness affecting the team, particularly Tavares, who missed the home opener against the Penguins and is also a game-time decision. His condition will be assessed throughout the day, but it seems that Max Domi will center the lineup regardless of Nylander’s availability.

“We’ll see how he feels as the day goes on. There’s been some improvement. Hopefully, he’ll feel better and be able to play,” Berube said to reporters.
