The Chicago Cubs are getting a head start on preparations for the 2025 MLB season.
While they missed the playoffs, the Cubs displayed some promise, especially in the second half of the season. Despite their efforts, they were unable to secure one of the three National League Wild Card spots.
As the winter approaches, expectations are high for the Cubs to be aggressive in free agency to make a return to the playoffs in 2025. However, they first need to make decisions regarding club options.
One player who is under consideration for 2025 is veteran infielder David Bote. If the Cubs decide to exercise his option, he will earn $7 million next season. There are valid points on both sides of the debate, but FanSided’s Zach Pressnell anticipates that Bote will remain with the team.
“David Bote makes a case to stay,” Pressnell noted. “He has been reliable in the past, and if the Cubs could sign him for less, it would make sense to keep him. However, with a $7 million option, the Cubs can’t afford to fill their roster with players in the $5 million to $10 million range if they plan to be aggressive in free agency.”
“That said, knowing Jed Hoyer, he might opt to bring Bote back despite the high cost. Bote’s career stats are .234/.318/.392, and he spent a significant portion of last season off the major league roster. While it may not be ideal to bring him back at this price, there’s a possibility Hoyer will do so for next season.”
Bote has played in 421 games for the Cubs over six seasons, recording a .234/.318/.392 batting line with 36 home runs and 156 RBIs. Although his $7 million price tag seems steep, his versatility across the diamond might sway the Cubs’ decision.
