Penn State has added yet another standout recruit to its program, continuing its trend of attracting top talent. This latest commitment enhances the team’s roster and showcases their strong recruiting efforts. The Nittany Lions are clearly building momentum as they aim for success on the field.
Penn State has secured a commitment from Josh Johnson, a safety from Ironton, Ohio. Johnson had taken an official visit to the Nittany Lions during the summer and had made several unofficial visits to the campus beforehand. Although he committed to Louisville in June, he recently reopened his recruitment after an official visit to Penn State.
In his own words, Johnson expressed his feelings about Penn State: “Penn State is all about family and looking out for me and my family. They genuinely want what’s best for me, not just in football, but in my life outside of it.” Johnson, who stands 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 185 pounds, connected with the entire coaching staff and players during his visits, particularly through his interactions with associate head coach and defensive recruiting coordinator Terry Smith, who was a key recruiter for him.
Johnson also praised Penn State’s history of developing players in the secondary. “Penn State is Lockdown U,” he stated. “They have one of the top defenses in college football right now, and the work they do with defensive backs is impressive. I feel like I have a strong relationship with the staff at PSU; I talk to many people there every day. I really love the energy when I’m on campus.”
As for other options, Johnson had been committed to Louisville but was also seriously considering Iowa and Arkansas, both of which he planned to visit officially.
Josh Johnson is a three-star recruit with a rating of 87 from 247Sports. He is ranked as the No. 90 cornerback in the 2025 class and the No. 39 senior in Ohio. The 247Sports Composite rankings align closely with these figures, placing Johnson as the No. 83 cornerback in the country and the No. 37 senior in Ohio.
Josh Johnson is being recruited as a cornerback by Penn State, but his size and skill set also allow for a potential transition to safety if needed, providing the team with versatility in the secondary. With a strong recruiting class, particularly at cornerback, Johnson will join highly ranked players like Daryus Dixson, Jahmir Joseph, and Xxavier Thomas, along with safety Braswell Thomas. Given the depth of this class and the returning talent, Johnson is not expected to contribute immediately, allowing him time to develop and prepare for his role.
