Colbie Young was arrested on Tuesday on two charges of battery and one charge of assault on an unborn child involving a 20-year-old woman who identified herself as his ex-girlfriend.

“I spoke with him this morning, and he will remain suspended until this legal matter is resolved,” Smart said during the Southeastern Conference coaches conference call. “We can’t comment further on the specifics, but we had a constructive meeting, and we are committed to educating our players about the serious nature of such incidents. This is very unfortunate.”

Smart emphasized the importance of responsible decision-making for players both on and off the field, calling the situation “really tough.”

Young was released from Athens-Clarke County jail on a $3,800 bond on Tuesday afternoon and is not expected to play against No. 5 Georgia’s upcoming game against Mississippi State due to the misdemeanor charges.

According to a police report obtained by The Associated Press, the woman claimed she went to Young’s apartment to discuss their relationship but that the conversation escalated after she discovered he was on the phone with another woman. She alleged that Young physically removed her from his room and squeezed her torso and abdomen, leading her to believe he was trying to harm her. Young reportedly denied the accusations and claimed not to have caused any visible injuries.

Young’s attorney, Kim Stephens, stated that Young merely asked his ex-girlfriend to leave his apartment and asserted that he did not engage in any physical contact that could be deemed criminal. She expressed confidence that Young would be fully exonerated once the investigation is complete.

A senior from Binghamton, New York, Young transferred to Georgia after two seasons at Miami. This season, he has recorded 11 receptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns in five games, including two starts, and had three catches for a team-leading 51 yards in last week’s win over Auburn.

This is not the first disciplinary issue for Georgia’s program this season; Smart previously dismissed wide receiver Rara Thomas from the team due to charges of cruelty to children and battery. Additionally, cornerback Daniel Harris was arrested on a reckless driving charge in September, highlighting ongoing concerns about driving-related incidents involving Georgia players.
