Pittsburgh Steelers slot cornerback has had a tough time in the last two games, particularly against the Dallas Cowboys, who specifically targeted him. He was thrown at eight times, giving up six catches for 90 yards, and also committed a holding penalty and an illegal hands-to-the-face infraction, which totaled over 100 yards in penalties.
Bishop’s struggles have caught the attention of opposing teams, prompting them to focus on him when the Steelers are in nickel defense. Head coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged this development, stating that it’s expected for Bishop to be targeted as a young player in the secondary.
While Bishop continues to see action, the Steelers are planning to use him until Cam Sutton returns from his suspension after the bye week. Sutton is expected to take over as the starting slot cornerback.
Former NFL general manager Doug Whaley has expressed concern about Bishop, labeling him a liability. He emphasized that Bishop needs to be more disciplined in zone coverage than in man-to-man situations, suggesting that the Steelers may need to consider other options if his performance doesn’t improve.
These comments highlight Bishop’s vulnerability, as the Cowboys clearly focused on him multiple times. With the upcoming game against the Raiders featuring talented slot receiver Jakobi Meyers and rookie tight end Brock Bowers, this poses a significant challenge for the Steelers.
