It’s no secret that Juan Soto, the 25-year-old superstar of the New York Yankees, will be the most sought-after free agent this offseason, with the New York Mets emerging as front-runners to sign him.
Bringing Soto on board would drastically change any MLB franchise. His impressive stats this season—.288 batting average, .990 OPS, 41 home runs, and 108 RBIs—demonstrate his immediate impact. Plus, his youth indicates that he may not have even reached his prime yet, suggesting over a decade of elite performance ahead.
However, acquiring Soto will be expensive, and only a few teams can afford such a signing and are willing to invest heavily in one player. The Mets fit both criteria.
Although New York has a strong roster, a recent Bleacher Report article highlighted how an injury-plagued season for one of their standout players makes pursuing Soto even more appealing.
“The cross-town Mets should also be considered serious contenders for Soto as they aim to build on an impressive turnaround this season. Adding his talent would enhance an already potent offense, and he could fit well in the outfield alongside Brandon Nimmo,” the article noted.
Concerns about Starling Marte, who is 35 and has faced health issues this season, only increase the urgency for the Mets to sign Soto. While Marte is under contract for next season, his potential for further injury makes adding Soto even more attractive for the team.
Not that the Mets needed any extra motivation to sign one of baseball’s biggest stars.
