The Houston Astros’ last two regular-season games have little at stake since they’ve already secured a spot in the Wild Card round. However, several players are still vying for a spot on the roster or a larger role.
This year’s team isn’t as dominant as in previous seasons, but they remain a threat thanks to the number of star players with championship experience.
For the Astros to succeed, staying healthy is crucial.
Currently, they’re missing two key players: Yordan Alvarez and Chas McCormick. While McCormick has struggled this season, he’s still an important part of their outfield and could regain his form in the playoffs.
As they prepare for the Wild Card matchup, there’s encouraging news about both players.
Joe Espada noted that Alvarez is “getting better quickly.” He’s staying home to rehab while the team plays the Cleveland Guardians, using a treadmill and weight room for workouts.
It’s essential that his sprained knee is ready for the playoffs; his absence would alter how opposing pitchers approach the lineup and complicate run production.
McCormick, who fractured his right hand on September 10, is also showing signs of progress.
Espada mentioned that McCormick will take live batting practice on Sunday and Monday, potentially making him a candidate for the roster when the Wild Card round begins on Tuesday.
Updates on their health will be closely watched as the manager decides on the playoff roster.
