South Carolina quarterback suffered a right ankle injury just before halftime during the game against No. 16 LSU. At the time, the Gamecocks were in a strong position to upset the Tigers, largely due to Sellers’ impressive performance. However, he limped off the field, favoring his left foot, and backup quarterback Robby Ashford took over.
Sellers returned in the third quarter, but Ashford primarily managed the game afterward. Despite South Carolina’s strong effort, they ultimately lost 36-33, having led as late as 3:30 in the game.
Before his injury, Sellers completed 9 of 16 passes for 113 yards with one interception and rushed for 88 yards, scoring two touchdowns, including a record-setting 75-yard run for a quarterback.
Following his injury, Sellers was seen on the sidelines with his ankle heavily taped, though he attempted to throw passes with Ashford and fellow quarterback Dante Reno. Ashford started the second half, with the Gamecocks leading 24-16. Sellers reentered after LSU scored but struggled, resulting in a punt. LSU took the lead shortly afterward.
With the Gamecocks down by five points, they quickly regained the lead thanks to a 66-yard touchdown run by Raheim Sanders. South Carolina’s defense then forced a fumble, leading to a field goal that put them ahead 33-29.
In the final moments, LSU executed a winning drive, capped off by a touchdown run from Josh Williams, making the score 36-33. The Gamecocks had one last chance but failed to convert on a 49-yard field goal attempt as time expired, ending their hopes for an upset.
