The Detroit Red Wings have officially signed Moritz Seider to a seven-year contract extension worth $59.85 million. This deal averages $8.55 million annually and runs through the 2030-31 season, after which Seider will be eligible for unrestricted free agency.

The 23-year-old Moritz Seider recorded nine goals and 33 assists for a total of 42 points in 82 games last season, placing him second among Red Wings defensemen, just behind Shayne Gostisbehere.

Entering his fourth year with Detroit, Seider was selected sixth overall in the 2019 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 2021-22 season, scoring seven goals and adding 43 assists for 50 points in 82 games, earning him the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie. He became the first German-born player to win the Calder and the first Red Wing to do so since Roger Crozier in the 1964-65 season.

Over his three years with the Red Wings, the Zell, Germany native has accumulated 21 goals and 113 assists for a total of 134 points in 246 games.

Before joining the NHL, Seider played in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) with Rögle BK, where he scored 28 points in 41 games and was named the SHL Defenseman of the Year. He also played in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) with Adler Mannheim, winning the DEL Championship and being recognized as the DEL Rookie of the Year.

With Seider’s new contract finalized, it’s worth noting that captain Dylan Larkin’s average annual value (AAV) will remain the highest on the team at $8.7 million.

The Red Wings will open their 2024-25 season against the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 10.
