Houston Astros Top superstar left Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels after an awkward slide into second base during the second inning. His departure comes just before a crucial three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at Minute Maid Park, which could be pivotal for the American League West standings.
After the slide, Alvarez seemed to be favoring his right leg, having hit it on the ground. Houston’s manager Joe Espada and assistant athletic trainer Eric Velazquez had an extended conversation with him as he gingerly tested his leg around the infield.
Alvarez was replaced by pinch-runner Mauricio Dubón but walked to the dugout on his own. The team later reported that he had a right knee contusion.
Despite the injury, Alvarez’s double brought his batting average to a team-high .308, and his .959 OPS ranks second on the team, just behind Kyle Tucker, who has had 300 fewer plate appearances due to a shin fracture that kept him out for three months.
Entering Sunday, the Astros had a magic number of three to secure their fourth consecutive division title over the Mariners.
