According to Frank Seravalli, the Edmonton Oilers have invited veteran forward to training camp on a professional tryout (PTO). Seravalli notes that Edmonton is seeking additional players in light of Carl Berglund’s injury in Penticton and aims to maintain their projected training camp roster size while giving Hoffman an opportunity to showcase his skills.
The 34-year-old Mike Hoffman played the 2023-24 season with the San Jose Sharks, recording 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points over 66 games. Over the past five years, he has had several stints with the Ottawa Senators, Florida Panthers, St. Louis Blues, and Montreal Canadiens.
Hoffman boasts six seasons in which he scored 20 or more goals, starting with 27 goals in 79 games during the 2014-15 season with Ottawa. His career high came in the 2018-19 season when he netted 36 goals with Florida; he followed that up with 29 goals the next season, just missing a second consecutive 30-goal campaign.
Throughout his NHL career, Hoffman has amassed 228 goals and 259 assists for a total of 487 points in 745 games, along with 20 points in 33 playoff appearances. Originally drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 2009, he honed his skills in junior hockey with the Gatineau Olympiques, Drummondville Voltigeurs, and Saint John Sea Dogs in the QMJHL, winning a championship in 2008-09 with Drummondville and earning both the MVP and Most Sportsmanlike Awards the following season. He also won a Calder Cup with the Binghamton Senators in the AHL during the 2010-11 season.
Hoffman is among several new additions to the Oilers, joining Matthew Savoie, Vasili Podkolzin, Jeff Skinner, Viktor Arvidsson, and Travis Dermott, who was also invited on a PTO. The Oilers’ training camp is set to begin today, with their first preseason game scheduled for Sunday against the Winnipeg Jets.
