The Edmonton Oilers have made significant additions to their roster this summer, and as training camp kicks off, they’ve made a low-risk, high-reward PTO move.
On the first day of training camp, it was announced that veteran forward Mike Hoffman has signed a PTO deal with the team, aiming to secure a spot with his sixth NHL team.
The 34-year-old last played for the San Jose Sharks in the 2023-24 season, recording 10 goals and 23 points in 66 games. While he may not be the same player who scored 70 points for Florida in 2018, he can still provide valuable veteran experience to the Edmonton team.
There were some indications that after 700 NHL games, Mike Hoffman might have played his last match at the highest level, but this signing shows he still has interest in the league. Cracking the Oilers’ roster won’t be easy, given the impressive talent on the team. However, with the expectation that Evander Kane will head to LTIR, a potential spot has opened up for him.
For the 2024-25 season, the Oilers are focused solely on winning the Stanley Cup. If Hoffman can contribute to that goal, he’ll have a shot at securing a roster spot. After a tough 2023-24 season, it remains to be seen if he can still be an asset at the NHL level.
