As the 2024 season draws to a close, the Chicago Cubs are actively seeking bullpen reinforcements. Their latest acquisition is right-hander Jimmy Herget, claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Braves.

Herget, 31, will be assigned to Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding move, the Cubs have called up Brennen Davis, who will be placed on the MLB 60-day injured list to create space on the 40-man roster.

Unfortunately, Davis’s season has been cut short due to a fractured ankle. The 24-year-old prospect now faces a lengthy recovery process as he aims to return for the 2025 season.

With the addition of Herget, the Cubs are bolstering their organizational depth in the bullpen. The veteran reliever, who has had a journeyman career, made eight appearances for the Braves this season.

While it’s uncertain if Herget will secure a spot on the Cubs’ active roster this year, he has an opportunity to end the season on a high note and make a positive impression. The Cubs are known for exploring all potential options, and Herget could earn a place with the team heading into Spring Training for 2025.

With the Cubs’ season nearly concluded, their roster moves are increasingly focused on future potential. Adding Herget represents a low-risk opportunity for the team to evaluate another bullpen option. If he performs well, this acquisition could prove highly beneficial down the line.

The Cubs have a track record of uncovering valuable talent, as seen with recent successes like Tyson Miller and Jorge Lopez, who have both made significant contributions to the bullpen. Herget could be the next “diamond in the rough” to help strengthen the team for the future.
