BREAKING: Just in, Packers Sign Receiver to Practice Squad after significant workout session

On Tuesday, the Green Bay Packers added receiver  to their practice squad, as reported by Packers On SI.

He was part of a significant workout session, securing a spot on the practice squad over two drafted receivers with NFL experience, Seth Williams and Racey McMath. The Packers also signed tight end Johnny Lumpkin to their practice squad.

To make space, the Packers released receiver Jalen Wayne and running back La’Mical Perine.

Luther, 24, initially signed with the Jets after the 2023 NFL Draft and spent most of his rookie season on the Patriots’ practice squad, though he did not appear in any regular-season games. He spent training camp this year with the Steelers but did not record any catches during the preseason.

In his senior year at Gardner-Webb in 2022, Luther had 55 receptions for 1,035 yards and seven touchdowns. Notably, only five of his catches were behind the line of scrimmage, and he caught 17 of 39 passes thrown more than 20 yards downfield, ranking fourth in the draft class for deep receptions.

Luther, a transfer from Wofford, accumulated 1,419 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns over two seasons at Gardner-Webb. He stands at 5-foot-11 1/4, with 4.50 speed and a 39-inch vertical jump, earning a 5.85 Relative Athletic Score.

Tre Lamb, former Gardner-Webb coach, commented, “We’ve had a few players from Gardner-Webb in the NFL, but T.J. is the first during my tenure. I’m thrilled for him and hopeful for more in the future.”

Luther was one of nine children of Virginia Luther, who passed away unexpectedly in 2019. He shared with The New York Post, “She always believed I’d be an NFL player. I’m definitely honoring her memory and fulfilling the promise I made to her.”

Growing up with eight brothers, Luther described his family life as highly competitive, with backyard football games and other activities fueling their competitive spirit. He recalled, “Everything was a competition, and we believed in the idea that iron sharpens iron.”

At the start of the day, the Packers’ practice squad included receivers Julian Hicks and Wayne.
