Major Move: Craig Counsell Favorite Star Identified as Key Cubs Offseason Target

The Chicago Cubs are expected to significantly increase their spending this offseason, marking a departure from their usual budgetary constraints. With the goal of competing for the World Series in 2025 and potential job security on the line in the front office, the Cubs have strong incentives to build a contending team.

How Orioles' Corbin Burnes became one of MLB's best pitchers

To address the gaps in their roster, they’ll need to make strategic moves, but investing in key players could resolve many of these issues. One pitcher who should be a focal point in their offseason strategy is right-handed pitcher Corbin Burnes of the Baltimore Orioles.

Burnes, a top-tier pitcher with connections to Craig Counsell, will be available on the open market. While the Orioles’ new ownership might offer him a substantial contract extension, Burnes may also be interested in reuniting with his former manager.

The competition for Burnes will likely come down to financial considerations, and the Cubs could have an edge over other teams like Baltimore in this regard. Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report has predicted that Burnes will switch teams in 2025, naming the Cubs as a potential landing spot.

Kelly notes that while the Dodgers will likely be in the mix, the Cubs—under the leadership of Counsell—are also strong contenders. Burnes, who will turn 30 in October, is a rare find in free agency, given his impressive resume and relatively young age.

The Cubs have been seeking a right-handed ace to complement their lefty-heavy rotation. Despite a few recent rough starts, Burnes has had an excellent year and was a serious contender for the American League Cy Young Award before his August 16 performance against the Boston Red Sox.

The Cubs should prioritize bringing Burnes to Wrigley Field next season to strengthen their pitching staff.
