The transaction removes Camargo from the club’s 40-man roster and gives the organization seven days to determine his next destination, whether through a trade, waiver claim, outright assignment to the minor leagues, or release.
The move comes at a critical point in the season as Atlanta continues to make roster adjustments in an effort to remain competitive. With every roster spot carrying increased importance, the Braves elected to part ways with one of their catching depth options to create room for another player.
Camargo, 25, has spent parts of two seasons in Major League Baseball after making his big-league debut with the Minnesota Twins in 2024. Although his opportunities at the highest level have been limited, the Colombian-born catcher has continued to develop as a solid organizational depth piece with defensive versatility and occasional offensive upside.
After beginning his professional career in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, Camargo eventually joined the Twins before finding his way to Atlanta. Throughout his journey, he earned a reputation for his strong throwing arm and ability to handle a pitching staff, traits that helped him remain in demand despite limited major league experience.
His stint with the Braves this season was brief, as he appeared in just one major league game. While his playing time was limited, Camargo made the most of his opportunity by recording a hit and scoring a run, finishing his short stay with Atlanta on a positive note. Most of his 2026 campaign, however, was spent with Triple-A Gwinnett, where he served as valuable catching depth while remaining ready for a call-up whenever injuries or roster needs arose.
The Braves’ decision to designate Camargo for assignment was driven more by roster management than performance. Atlanta needed to free a spot on its 40-man roster after selecting the contract of outfielder José Azócar, who was added to the active roster following Eli White’s placement on the paternity list. The corresponding move ultimately made Camargo the odd man out.
While being designated for assignment often creates uncertainty for a player, it does not necessarily signal the end of his time with the organization. Over the next seven days, Atlanta can explore a trade with another club, place Camargo on outright waivers, or release him. If he clears waivers and meets the eligibility requirements, he could remain in the Braves organization while continuing to play for Triple-A Gwinnett.
