As the offseason progresses, the recruiting outlook for North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball—now led by head coach Michael Malone—remains fluid and full of uncertainty. With several roster spots still open, questions continue to grow about the program’s next moves. The Tar Heels have been casting a wide net, evaluating talent both in the U.S. and overseas, which shows they’re open to all options as they prepare for the upcoming season. Much of the attention has centered on strengthening the frontcourt, especially at center, where the team is looking for both depth and a strong presence.
Recently, a few potential targets have caught attention. Players like Mouhamed Saye and Brice Dessert have been widely discussed, with fans keeping a close eye on any recruiting developments. Now, though, a surprising new name has entered the mix, adding fresh intrigue to UNC’s offseason strategy.
Italian center Luigi Suigo is emerging as a possible candidate for Carolina. The 7-footer is currently going through the NBA Draft process, but comments from Aaron Torres have fueled speculation that Suigo could become a real option if he pulls out before the late-May deadline. Speaking on a podcast, Torres suggested UNC may still be exploring additional recruits, hinting that another international big man could be under consideration. While he didn’t make any firm claims, he indicated that the Tar Heels could pursue Suigo if he becomes available.

At the moment, Suigo’s immediate future hinges on feedback from NBA teams. According to a recent mock draft from ESPN, he is projected to be selected in the second round by the Los Angeles Clippers at No. 36 overall. That projection places him in a range where players often face a difficult decision: remain in the draft and begin a professional career, or return to a developmental environment such as college basketball to further refine their game and potentially improve their stock.
UNC’s current roster situation only adds to the urgency of these decisions. With Henri Veesaar opting to stay in the draft, the Tar Heels have already taken steps to reinforce their frontcourt by bringing in Cade Bennerman for additional depth. The commitment of five-star center Sayon Keita has also generated excitement, but there is still a clear desire to secure another high-impact presence in the paint.

Whether that final piece comes in the form of Saye, Dessert, or potentially Suigo remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that Malone and his staff are casting a wide net, carefully evaluating talent from across the globe to ensure they assemble the strongest possible roster. As the draft withdrawal deadline approaches, all eyes will be on Suigo’s decision, which could significantly shape the next phase of UNC’s recruiting efforts.
