BREAKING: Red Sox Lose ‘Elite’ Catcher To Yankees In Free Agent Deal

The Boston Red Sox have been active this offseason, though they may still need to address organizational depth, particularly in the minor leagues.

Boston lost catcher  to the New York Yankees, who signed him to a minor league contract. Sánchez had become a free agent on October 6 after the season ended. While he appeared in only four games for the Red Sox last year, he delivered respectable production at the Triple-A level and could have been a reasonable depth option for the organization to retain.

Although Sánchez was never expected to be a major difference-maker, he provided reliable insurance in case of injuries. Instead, the Yankees opted to bring him in and assigned him to Triple-A.

Sánchez opened the season with the Toronto Blue Jays, spending most of his time in Triple-A. He was called up to the majors twice but was designated for assignment after each stint. Following the second DFA, the Red Sox claimed him off waivers.

After appearing in just one game with Boston, Sánchez was designated for assignment again and chose free agency rather than accepting an outright move to Worcester. He later signed with the Mets, who traded him back to the Red Sox on August 31, allowing him to appear in three additional games for Boston.

He hit just .217 in the big leagues last season. However, he posted a .279/.347/.419 slash line with six home runs for the Blue Jays in Triple-A. He has decent numbers at the plate, but has not found much success in the big leagues.

Between the New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals, Miami Marlins, Blue Jays and Red Sox, he has played in 50 big league games.

Losing Sánchez is not a huge deal, but Boston may need to start thinking about organizational depth. They have lost some depth in trades to land stars, and may start making more minor league signings.
