Latest: Louisiana governor takes shot at LSU football with live tiger quip

Many were let down by the LSU Tigers’ performance in their 42-13 defeat to No. 11 Alabama on Saturday, but few seemed to feel it more than Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry. At a “Politics with a Punch” event on Monday, Landry couldn’t resist poking fun at LSU after their heavy loss to Alabama. The Tigers were outgained 421 yards to 343, out-rushed 312 yards to 104, and committed three turnovers while Alabama had none.

“Our tiger, our live tiger, unfortunately, disappointingly, was the only tiger who showed up Saturday. I’m sorry,” Landry said, according to the Advocate.

Along with expressing frustration over the team’s performance on the field, Landry also commented on the contentious decision to bring a live tiger to the stadium for the first time in more than a decade, particularly for the high-profile SEC rivalry game that attracted so much attention to LSU.

Landry has been forthright with his opinion that LSU should have a live tiger on the sideline for all home games, stating the school got away from doing so because of “woke people.”

“I’m going to tell you something, this is about tradition, and the thing about tradition is about respecting those who came before you,” Landry added. “…I had more people come up to me, and they remembered Mike the Tiger more than some of the great plays in Tiger Stadium. And they grew up as children seeing this. It’s about tradition.”

Tiger or no tiger, LSU put forth arguably its worst performance of the season against Alabama, a defeat that dropped the team from No. 14 to No. 21 in the Associated Press college football rankings. With two consecutive losses, the Tigers now have a solid opportunity to bounce back on Saturday in a road matchup against the 4-5 Florida Gators.
