The Chicago Cubs are aiming to be competitive by the 2025 MLB season, but with their current roster, adjustments are necessary.
Fans are eager for the team to make a significant move this offseason, hoping for at least one star player through free agency or trades.
Jed Hoyer has taken a more cautious approach in recent years, avoiding major financial commitments to elite players and instead focusing on smaller, strategic improvements.
A key question heading into free agency is the future of star outfielder and first baseman Cody Bellinger. He must decide whether to opt into his $27.5 million contract for 2025 or explore free agency.
If Bellinger opts out, the Cubs will need to find replacements. Recently, Zach Pressnell of FanSided suggested that the Cubs could sign Anthony Rizzo, a move that fans would likely support.
Pressnell notes that the Yankees might consider declining Rizzo’s option, aiming to re-sign him at a lower cost. If they don’t, the Cubs, who need a first baseman, could pursue Rizzo as an affordable option.
While the Cubs currently have Michael Busch, who excelled in 2024, Rizzo could be valuable if Bellinger departs. Bellinger’s exit would create a gap in the outfield, and while Seiya Suzuki could take that spot, he has primarily been a designated hitter. This is where Rizzo could fit in.
Rizzo could be signed as the designated hitter, and although he’s not the powerhouse he once was, returning to the Cubs might revitalize his performance. This would allow Suzuki to transition back to the outfield.
In 2024, Rizzo played 92 games with the Yankees, hitting eight home runs with 35 RBIs and batting .228/.301/.335. Given his struggles, he might be available at a reasonable price, fitting well within Chicago’s budget and making a homecoming appealing.
While this scenario isn’t guaranteed, it’s definitely one to watch.
