During Thursday’s practice in Edmonton, the Pittsburgh Penguins were on the ice without 29-year-old who has been reassigned back to Pittsburgh.
Coach Mike Sullivan announced after practice that he returned to Pittsburgh, a day off for the team during their road trip through western Canada, and will be working with one of the franchise’s goaltending coaches, Jon Elkin, “getting some individual time.”
The goaltender has had a challenging season, and Sullivan mentioned that sending him back to work individually with Elkin is part of their plan to help him improve. This strategy had been established at the beginning of the Penguins’ road trip, which started with three goaltenders. Since Alex Nedeljkovic returned from injury on Sunday, he and rookie Joel Blomqvist have been managing the goaltending responsibilities.
Jarry, who has four years left on his contract with a $5.375 million salary cap hit, was a second-round draft pick for the Penguins in 2013. A former All-Star, he has a record of 1-1-0 in three games this season, with a 5.47 goals-against average and an .836 save percentage.
Sullivan emphasized the team’s commitment to helping Jarry get back on track, stating, “He’s a high-quality goaltender and a high-quality person. He’s been a vital part of our organization for many years and has delivered solid performances for us.”
