Georgia Bulldogs safety Dan Jackson and nickel Joenel Aguero were ejected for targeting during the team’s 30-15 victory over the Texas Longhorns last week. In the fourth quarter, Jackson’s hit on wide receiver Matthew Golden and Aguero’s tackle on running back Quintrevion Wisner raised concerns, leading to their ejections.
Head coach Kirby Smart acknowledged the contentious nature of the calls, noting they were “really close, unfortunate borderline situations.” He pointed out that both players were attempting to adjust their hits to avoid penalties, emphasizing the challenge of maintaining player safety while navigating the complexities of targeting rules.
As a result of the ejections, Jackson and Aguero are expected to be suspended for the first half of Georgia’s upcoming game against Florida on November 2, following a bye week. However, there is a possibility they could be cleared to play pending an appeals process, although Smart refrained from discussing the details.
Jackson has been a standout contributor, ranking second on the team with 37 tackles, along with an interception, a fumble recovery, and a blocked field goal. Aguero, who has also been active in every game this season, has tallied 19 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a QB hit.
The potential absence of these key defenders could significantly impact Georgia’s secondary, especially given their crucial roles in shutting down Texas last Saturday. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds leading up to the Florida game.
