It’s clear that the Philadelphia Phillies need to make some changes as they move forward. While it’s unclear what major steps they could take to significantly enhance their team, it’s evident that they are farther from winning a World Series than initially thought over the last two years.
The challenge for Philadelphia is that making substantial upgrades seems nearly impossible. Although players like Mike Trout from the Los Angeles Angels could potentially be traded, it would require taking on a significant financial commitment.
There are various other players who may become available this offseason, but many of them will come with a hefty price tag.
One thing the front office has demonstrated in recent years is a willingness to invest money. While extending their payroll significantly might be unlikely, they shouldn’t be ruled out when it comes to pursuing any player available through free agency or trades.
It appears that this winter will follow a similar trend, as Dave Dombrowski has indicated plans to spend and make trades to improve the team.
“I’m not going to reveal too much at this stage,” Dombrowski stated, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic. “It’s a situation where if I mention one thing, it might lead to speculation about which player is being traded. We have many talented players, so we need to be open to exploring our options and talking with other teams. That process hasn’t started yet. Sometimes you trade good players for good players.”
As Dombrowski noted, he can’t openly discuss trading specific players, as it would harm their morale and diminish their trade value.
Few front offices in Major League Baseball have demonstrated the track record that Dombrowski has over the past few offseasons. Although this hasn’t yet resulted in a World Series title, this core group is capable of competing with any team in the league.
With some adjustments and fine-tuning, don’t count them out.
Philadelphia is committed to being competitive for the foreseeable future and will do everything possible to achieve that goal.
