The Pittsburgh Penguins are set to make some roster additions soon. Coach Mike Sullivan provided updates on several players dealing with injuries sustained during preseason, as the team anticipates their return and future roster decisions.
The forward is progressing in his recovery from a concussion, having skated Wednesday morning prior to the game. Sullivan noted that while it wasn’t Lizotte’s first time on the ice, it was his first elevated session.
The, 26, sustained a concussion in a preseason game against the Ottawa Senators on September 29 when a puck struck him while he was on the bench. Since then, he has not participated in official practices or morning skates.
Vasily Ponomarev, who has been sidelined with an upper-body injury since early in the preseason, is expected to join the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins once he is activated. He skated Wednesday morning and remains a key prospect for potential call-ups.
Matt Nieto, recovering from multiple knee surgeries, also skated with the group. After signing a two-year, $1.8 million deal in the summer of 2023, Nieto has only played 21 games with the Penguins, the last being in November 2023. He underwent knee surgery and faced a setback in January, and is currently listed as out month-to-month.
Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic participated in drills during and after the morning skate, indicating he is nearing a return. He is currently listed as out, week-to-week, following a lower-body injury sustained against the Detroit Red Wings on September 30.
