In 2024, one of the standout stories for the Cubs was the debut of Japanese rookie Shota Imanaga. The 31-year-old left-hander finished with a 15-3 record, a 2.91 ERA, and 174 strikeouts, earning him the distinction of being the Cubs’ sole representative at the All-Star Game.
Imanaga has proven to be a valuable asset after signing a four-year, $53 million contract with Chicago. This success might encourage the Cubs to pursue another Japanese starter in 2025.
The next candidate is Tomoyuki Sugano, who is set to make his MLB debut at 35. After an impressive 2024 season in Japan’s NPB, Sugano could be a significant addition if his skills translate to the majors.
Recently, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller predicted that Sugano could sign with the Cubs. He noted that Sugano has a 2.45 ERA over 1,873.1 innings, including a remarkable 1.67 ERA in 156.2 innings this past season, along with a 6.94 K/BB ratio. Given the success of players like Yamamoto and Imanaga in their transitions to the MLB, there may be increased competition for Sugano’s services compared to previous years.
Miller suggests a potential two-year, $30 million deal, which would be a relatively modest commitment for starting pitching today. While Sugano may not be the ace Cubs fans are hoping for—like Corbin Burnes or Max Fried—signing him wouldn’t preclude the team from pursuing a top-tier pitcher.
The offseason is just beginning, and the Cubs have plenty to consider. However, the prospect of Sugano joining Imanaga in the rotation for the Cubs’ 2025 opener in Tokyo is certainly an exciting possibility.
