The St. Louis Cardinals are weighing their options as they plan to shop around contracts for several star players this winter to cut payroll.
Although Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak has suggested that major players are unlikely to be traded this offseason, he hasn’t completely ruled it out.
There’s a possibility of a significant trade between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Cardinals, potentially bringing St. Louis a new third baseman for 2025.
Tim Kelly from Bleacher Report mentioned that the Cardinals might consider Alec Bohm or Bryson Stott if the Phillies don’t value them as highly as they did a year ago, especially if closer Ryan Helsley is traded to Philadelphia.
Bohm had a strong season with the Phillies, hitting .280 with 61 extra-base hits, including 15 home runs, 97 RBIs, and a .780 OPS over 143 games.
Entering his second year of arbitration, the 28-year-old has an estimated market value of about $20.5 million per year and could secure a seven-year, $144 million contract.
While taking on such a pricey contract would be challenging for St. Louis, the potential trade of 33-year-old Nolan Arenado might make them more open to dealing Helsley to the Phillies in exchange for Bohm.
However, given the Cardinals’ aim to cultivate homegrown talent for the future, it wouldn’t be surprising if Arenado is traded and former top prospect Jordan Walker shifts from the outfield back to his more familiar position at third base.
