The Chicago Cubs may not make the playoffs this year, but they have potential for next season.
With a solid roster and one of the top managers in the game, Craig Counsell, the Cubs are not in rebuilding mode. Instead, they are likely to pursue at least one star player this winter through free agency or trades.
They’ve already been connected to several potential targets, particularly at first base. USA Today Sports’ Bob Nightengale suggested that if New York Mets star Pete Alonso doesn’t return to the Mets, he could end up in Seattle or with the Cubs.
Alonso, one of baseball’s premier sluggers, would significantly enhance the Cubs’ offense. Speculation about a trade involving him has circulated for two years; he was expected to be dealt in 2023, but the Mets chose to keep him. Throughout that period, the Cubs were frequently mentioned as a potential destination.
Despite not being traded, Alonso remained a topic of trade rumors last winter and before this summer’s trade deadline, with the Cubs again linked to him.
Now set to hit free agency this winter, Alonso is projected to command a $242 million contract, making the Cubs a likely contender for his services.
