Yankees fans are grappling with another tough blow as a vital pitcher faces injury setbacks. This latest development raises further concerns about the team’s chances as the postseason approaches. The New York Yankees have placed reliever on the injured list for the remainder of the regular season due to a right pectoral strain and have called up rookie Clayton Beeter to replace him.
Cousins exited Thursday’s game in Seattle because of tightness in his pectoral muscle. Yankees manager Aaron Boone mentioned that Cousins might start throwing off a mound next week and could be available for the playoffs, although he is set to see team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad on Monday.
The 30-year-old right-hander has been one of the Yankees’ top relievers this season, boasting a 2.37 ERA over 37 games and achieving a career-high 53 strikeouts. He went without allowing an earned run in 29 of those appearances and surrendered just five hits to the last 61 batters he faced.
Beeter has a record of 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA over 39 innings this season, split between Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 25-year-old made his MLB debut earlier this year, pitching a scoreless inning for the Yankees in March. He has joined the team in Oakland, where they are concluding a three-game series on Sunday.
After missing some time due to a shoulder injury, Beeter has been impressive since returning, not allowing any runs in five appearances covering seven innings in the minors this month.
Manager Aaron Boone praised Beeter’s recent performances, noting he has been “lights out” and possesses “really good stuff.” Boone added, “He can be a factor.”
