Forward Dawson Mercer is the only player absent as the Devils begin training camp. Mercer completed the final year of his entry-level contract in 2023-24, and negotiations for a new deal have yet to reach an agreement.

“I think we’re very close,” said general manager Tom Fitzgerald. “I’ve had healthy and respectful discussions with his agent. However, until we finalize things, he will miss parts of camp. I hope we can resolve this soon.”

Mercer’s teammates are eager for his return but understand the business side of the situation.

“We’re all hoping he gets his deal done and joins us, ready for Prague,” said center Jack Hughes. “We really appreciate Daws as both a person and a player. We’re hopeful he can arrive in the next few days.”

“We want him here; he’s a vital part of our team. Right now, we need to focus on the players in the room,” forward Jesper Bratt added. “We just hope this gets resolved so he can be with us.”

At 22, Mercer has played 246 consecutive games to start his career, scoring 64 goals and totaling 131 points over three seasons. His best year was 2022-23, when he recorded career highs of 27 goals, 29 assists, and 56 points.

Last season, he finished with 20 goals and 33 points in 82 games.
