Oklahoma State’s basketball program is aiming for a comeback after experiencing a decline in recent years. Once a consistent contender in March Madness, the Cowboys’ struggles ultimately led to Mike Boynton’s exit from Stillwater.
Boynton had managed to attract talent while securing enough wins to stay in charge, but the program has now hired Steve Lutz to reignite their success. Early signs suggest that Lutz will have no trouble bringing in new talent.
On Wednesday, four-star center Kareem Stagg named Oklahoma State among his final four schools for recruitment, alongside Georgia, Michigan, and Houston. The IMG Academy prospect’s interest highlights the potential for a positive shift in the Cowboys’ recruiting efforts.
The four-star prospect, ranked as the No. 9 center in Florida and No. 72 overall in the nation by 247Sports, has garnered attention from several top programs. Oklahoma State extended an offer on June 5, just ahead of the other three schools on his shortlist.
Adam Finkelstein from 247Sports evaluated Stagg’s performance, noting significant improvement over the past year. “Stagg’s rate of improvement has been off the charts,” Finkelstein wrote. “He has not only made great physical strides, but his face-up skill set is evolving. He’s beginning to show potential as both a rhythm shooter and a ball-handler.”
In addition to enhancing his offensive capabilities, Stagg has improved his physicality, agility, and ability to create plays off the dribble. Finkelstein also praised his defensive skills, highlighting his high motor and effectiveness as a rim protector—qualities that align well with Coach Lutz’s preferences.
Stagg represents a high-upside addition for Lutz and the Cowboys as they look to strengthen their 2025 recruiting class.
