The New York Rangers and their captain, Jacob Trouba, were the focus of trade rumors this offseason. Reports, including one from the New York Post, suggested discussions about a potential move involving Trouba, particularly with the Detroit Red Wings. However, general manager Chris Drury clarified that Trouba remains a key part of the Rangers’ plans for the upcoming season. During a media session on September 17, Drury acknowledged the rumors but didn’t confirm or deny specific trade talks, highlighting the ongoing communication between him and Trouba throughout the summer.
“We’ve had a number of different conversations over the course of the summer (about) a lot of different things,” Drury said. “He is very clear as to where he stands with me, and what I think of him as a player and as a leader.” There’s no denying that Trouba’s $8 million annual salary cap hit played a role in the trade speculation as it eats a huge chunk of New York’s salary cap.
Clearing up cap space would have given Drury more flexibility to strengthen other parts of the Rangers’ roster. However, the 30-year-old defenseman has expressed a desire to remain in New York, backed by his 15-team no-trade list. Ultimately, Drury and the Rangers chose to keep their captain, possibly due to the lack of viable trade partners, and the GM appears pleased to retain Trouba on the team.
“I think he’s done a really good job here as a captain,” Drury said. “There are so many moving parts that go in and out of being a captain, especially in New York and especially the Rangers captain.
“I’m excited to have him back, excited for training camp. I know he had a terrific offseason training-wise.”
