“It Sucks” Alex Cora Bluntly Criticizes Red Sox’s Late-Season Struggles

Alex Cora understands there’s no way to gloss over the situation with the Red Sox as the MLB regular season comes to a close.

On Tuesday night, Boston lost its series opener against Tampa Bay, dropping their record below .500 for the first time since June 11. The team has gone 8-16 in their last 24 games and started Wednesday five games behind the final American League wild-card spot, with just 11 games remaining.

It’s been a tough stretch for Cora and his team, and the World Series-winning manager didn’t shy away from addressing it after their recent loss.

“It sucks,” Cora told reporters at Tropicana Field, per MLB.com. “We’ve got three ways (we can be): average, below average, or above average, right? And right now we’re below average. Like I’ve been saying all along, it’s not lack of effort. It’s just not happening for us right now. It was just a bad one tonight.”

At this stage, one might say the Red Sox are playing for pride. They also have an opportunity to play spoiler this weekend against the Minnesota Twins, who are still vying for a postseason spot.

In the meantime, Boston will continue its series in Tampa Bay on Wednesday. NESN’s complete coverage of the middle game starts at 5:30 p.m. ET.
