With just over two weeks left in the regular season, the Chicago Cubs’ playoff aspirations seem to have been dashed following their defeat against the Colorado Rockies on Friday night.
In the top of the eighth inning, trailing 5-2, Michael Busch’s pivotal three-run, 453-foot home run briefly gave the Cubs a lead, offering a glimmer of hope to delay their elimination.
However, that hope evaporated in the bottom of the eighth when Hunter Goodman hit a 413-foot grand slam to left center field, effectively sealing the Cubs’ fate for the season.
Now six games behind the final Wild Card spot, the Cubs will miss the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.
Although it’s been encouraging to see the team continue to fight for a postseason spot, the organization may have missed an opportunity to promote some top prospects for their MLB debut.
With several star minor leaguers close to making the big leagues, the Cubs will head into Spring Training uncertain of their potential, having opted to keep these prospects in the minors while pursuing a Wild Card spot.
One notable prospect, Brennen Davis, was among those hoping for a call-up. A second-round pick in the 2018 draft, Davis was once considered a top 10 prospect in the Cubs’ system and reached the top spot in 2022. Despite his potential, injuries have prevented him from debuting in the majors.
Davis is now sidelined with a left ankle fracture, as reported by Meghan Montemuro of The Chicago Tribune. The Cubs have placed him on the 60-day IL and claimed reliever Jimmy Hergert off waivers from the Atlanta Braves, assigning him to their Triple-A affiliate.
With a swift recovery, Davis might have a chance to contribute to the Cubs in the 2025 season.
